Ignition Systems
[Printer friendly page]

This section will be a repository for information on ignition systems - including but not limited to - distributors, electronic ignition, Pertronix, points, spark plug wires, and spark plugs. Please feel free to send me any information which you think could be helpful. Thanks! A few bits of information about ignition systems for those who may not know:
  • Dual Fire (Waste Spark) ignition systems fire both the TDC cylinder and another cylinder not in use, igniting leftover gasses and causing unnecessary loss and vibration
  • Dual Plug ignition systems typically have a second spark plug in the head at the opposite side of the cylinder. More modern heads are efficient enough that this design gives little gain.
  • Rev Limiter is a limit imposed in some electrical or mechanical way to prevent the RPM's of the engine from exceeding the some predetermined limit
  • Single Fire ignition systems fire only the cylinder which is needed at that point to drive the crankshaft
  • Multi Spark ignition systems typically have two features - a longer spark duration to burn more efficiently and a second spark to burn any leftover flamables in the cylinder
